Cyberpunk 2077 is arguably one of the most anticipated games of all time and – apart from the bugs – reviews have mostly lavished the game with praise for its incredible open-world, interesting story, and great roster of characters. While an epilepsy charity has urged CD Projekt RED to update the game for safety reasons, most people are still massively excited and some are asking: is Cyberpunk 2077 multiplayer? Here you’ll discover when online multiplayer will be coming out at the earliest.
While bugs are the main takeaway from people’s criticisms of what is unanimously referred to as a ridiculously ambitious project, CD Projekt RED has assured fans that Cyberpunk 2077 is a different game on consoles after downloading the patches. This – hopefully – means that console and even PC gamers won’t have to stomach most of the bugs that dampened the mood of reviewers.
Cyberpunk 2077 is an open-world, action-adventure story set in Night City, a megalopolis obsessed with power, glamour and body modification. You play as V, a mercenary outlaw going after a one-of-a-kind implant that is the key to immortality. A long while ago, CDPR said that they would be releasing free Cyberpunk 2077 DLC in “early 2021.”Well, that is days away, and it seems likely that timelines may have.
While bugs are an obvious cause of concern and have been for months prior to its launch, below you’ll discover when online multiplayer is expected to come out at the earliest.

Does Cyberpunk 2077 have online multiplayer?
There is no online multiplayer in Cyberpunk 2077.
Cyberpunk 2077 is not a multiplayer game at launch, meaning you cannot enjoy any online gameplay with your friends.
This is obviously disappointing for some as the prospect of riding around Night City with a mate is undeniably tantalising.

However, know that the game is said to have an incredible amount of choices and characters that make for a fun single-player experience.
Plus, although people like Jackie will be even better than your best of mates, multiplayer is coming eventually.
When will Cyberpunk 2077 have multiplayer?
The earliest Cyberpunk 2077 will have multiplayer is probably 2022.
As for why 2022 is the earliest Cyberpunk 2077 will probably have multiplayer, it’s because CD Projekt RED have said that 2021 is unlikely.
Speaking to investors during a Q&A call back when the game was scheduled for September, CD Projekt RED’s Michal Nowakowski said the following (via PC Gamer):
“Given the expected release of Cyberpunk 2077 in September, and frankly speaking the series of events which we expect to occur after that date, 2021 appears unlikely as a release date for the Cyberpunk multiplayer.”

It’s possible that multiplayer could come out even beyond 2022, which would be an increasingly agonising wait for fans.
- HOW LONG: To beat the main story of Cyberpunk 2077
However, CD Projekt RED have promised plenty of free and paid for DLC, and the reason online gameplay will take so long is because it’s considered an individual AAA product rather than just a mode.

In brief: CD Projekt Red has earned its consumer-friendly reputation by putting out high-quality products like The Witcher 3 and avoiding aggressive microtransactions (MTX) in its singleplayer titles. However, it seems the company will compromise its values somewhat with Cyberpunk 2077's future online mode.
Though the base game will still be the same MTX-free experience it's always been touted as, Cyberpunk 2077's multiplayer version will feature some form of monetization.
That's not exactly a surprise. CD Projekt Red is treating the online portion of Cyberpunk 2077 as a totally separate entity: it has its own development team, and so it does make sense that it would have its own monetization system.
However, that's not a cause for panic just yet. The singleplayer game will still have free and paid DLC, and though some modern 'live services' feature aggressive monetization, including loot boxes, pay-to-win elements, and excessive grinding (designed to encourage the purchase of MTX), CD Projekt Red seems to be promising that it won't go down that road.
Nothing changed. Cyberpunk 2077 is a single player game with zero microtransactions. One single purchase. No tricks. Don't believe the clickbait. https://t.co/qX0iZwsAf2
— Cyberpunk 2077 (@CyberpunkGame) September 7, 2020Of course, other AAA developers make similar promises and often fail to keep them, so some skepticism is certainly warranted here. Still, if there's one team that's earned at least a modicum of trust from the gaming community, it's CD Projekt Red.
Cyberpunk 2077 Online Play
Cyberpunk 2077's online component is expected to ship as an add-on to the base game sometime in 2022 (at the earliest). It was initially slated to launch before 2021, but we suspect that Covid-19, as well as Cyberpunk 2077's multiple delays, have both contributed to a later launch window.
