What is a Round Robin bet?

A round robin is a way for bettors to make multiple parlay bets on a group of teams at once without having to creative a separate ticket for each of combination. A football specific round robin. Often overlooked, particularly by novice sports bettors, Round Robin wagering enables you to create multiple parlays on a single ticket. For example, what if you have found four really great NFL bets to lay a few dollars on this Sunday, as outlined below, but don’t know how to structure your wagers. New York Jets New England Patriots -10 (-105).

Round Robin Sports Betting Explained

A Round Robin bet is made of 3 doubles and 1 treble, just as a Trixie bet is. But in addition, there are three Up and Down bets. Each of the up and down bets consists of two bets within them, so add all that up together and you get your 10 bets in a Round Robin.

That 10 is what the unit stake will be multiplied by. So a £1 Round Robin needs a £10 stake. The appeal of the Round Robin is all of the coverage that it gives. Because within the Up and Down bets there are win singles being played, a return from a Round Robin will be guaranteed if just one of your original three selections wins.

How does a Round Robin bet work?

There are different components to a Round Robin. First of all, there are doubles and the one treble. These are straight forward multiple bets where the cumulative odds in each are multiplied together. A double with both selections at 1.91 for example gives 1.91 x 1.91 = 3.64 odds. So a £1 unit stake on that returns £3.64.

Up and Down bets

Alongside the doubles and the treble, there are the Up and Down bets. An Up and Down bet is a conditional bet. It contains two separate parts. Two example selections are Chelsea and Manchester United.

  • Part 1 would be IF Chelsea win, a matched stake gets played on Manchester United.
  • Part 2 would be IF Manchester United win, a matched stake gets played on Chelsea.

So it is a bet designed to try and double your returns from just the two selections, by reversing the order in the second part of the bet. The main conditional is that the second leg of each of the parts only gets played if there is enough returned from the first leg to match the initial stake that was played.

Losing Example of a Round Robin in Football

The Up and Down bets are important here. In the Chelsea and Manchester United Up and Down, if only Chelsea won for example, you would get the return from that first leg having won. It would mean that the stake used for the second selection, Manchester United, would be lost.

So the Up and Down gives that advantage over something like a straight double which needs both selections to win. However, if the winning selection in an Up and Down doesn’t win at big enough odds, there may not be enough coming back to have covered your original stake. So that’s something just to plan and watch out for.

One of the original three selections used to create the Round Robin are included in five of the ten bets that create a Round Robin. So immediately if just one of the three selections happens to not win, things start taking a hit.

So let’s take out one of the teams winning in the Round Robin example and see how much it takes out. There would be a big difference to what Chelsea at 2/1 losing and Arsenal at 10/11 losing would do to your returns.

There would be a lot less coming back if Chelsea at the longer odds were the losers. So let’s split the difference and make Manchester United at Evens the losing selection. Remember, that’s five bets that get affected.

What’s a Round Robin parlay bet?

It is possible to create a Round Robin Parlay. This is slightly different from a normal Round Robin. A Parlay is a term used in North American betting mostly, and it’s an alternative name to an Acca, that’s all.

A Round Robin Parlay is betting on a group of selections in a combination of Parlays. It’s comparable to a system bet. A four-team Round Robin Parlay (by twos) is asking for all combinations of doubles from the four selections.

Note though that the more selections that are included, the more complex and difficult the bet is going to get. You can go up to bigger versions of a Round Robin Parlay, maybe even up to a 9 or 10 team bet.

Round Robin Formula

Once you start getting into the Up and Down bets, things start to get a little more complex. It’s always worth using a bet calculator to play with the potential outcomes and see what profit and risk is in play. This will clearly help you understand those different permutations that could happen with the bet.

The benefit of a Round Robin is that not all selections within it have to win to get a return. So there is some coverage there. It is not a bet that really requires a lot of strategy, but as with all multiple bets, the general rule of thumb is to lean towards shorter-odds options because that strengthens the chances of the bet coming up trumps as a whole.

Are Round Robin bets worth it?

The advantage that the Round Robin bet has over its close relative the Trixie is that you will guarantee a return with only one winning selection. In a Trixie, you need at least two. So it’s the extra coverage of the Up and Down bets that are the clear advantage. The disadvantage to that is that there is an increased stake requirement. A Trixie needs a x7 unit stake while a Round Robin needs an x10 unit stake.
